The Incredible Success of Treating Scoliosis with Chiropractic

Scoliosis can look intimidating to anyone.  I have much respect for this disorder and the people who are involved in overcoming it.  This is actually a sensitive subject for me, personally.  I have shed more than one tear while doing the research for this article.  The reason involves the unnecessary and tragic ending of a friend who was failed by a few conventional scoliosis practices.  While there is nothing that I can do for him now, there is something that I can do in honor of him, which is to share information with anyone wishing to learn more about this condition and how entirely possible a full and healthy lifestyle is with scoliosis.  Scoliosis does not have to be painful or debilitating and can be treated in a very easy, non-invasive manner.

Scoliosis Basics

While there are different types of scoliosis, the condition is basically an issue of nerve communication within your body.  The unnatural S or C shaped curve is an unfortunate symptom of this problem.

Congenital scoliosis is an uncommon condition that occurs before birth.

Neuromuscular, paralytic, or myopathic scoliosis is caused by different muscle disorders.

Adult or secondary scoliosis develops through spinal degeneration or a similar disorder, usually after 65 years.

Idiopathic scoliosis is the most common.  Idiopathic meaning “of unknown origin”.  This can occur at any age.

Scoliosis usually affects pre-pubescent children as their spine develops and they experience growth spurts (it is important to note that the methods used at school scoliosis screenings are not sufficient for diagnosis so getting a scoliosis check-up outside of school is recommended).  When discs in the spine are misplaced, the spine gets forced out of alignment during these spurts.  Since the body is growing so quickly, those discs stay stuck in that misplaced position, causing dysfunction and worsening the condition without proper treatment.

The sooner scoliosis is found and treated properly, the easier it is to manage for life (this goes against some modern practices of watching it until it worsens).  Correcting the scoliosis curve is much easier to do in children than it is in adults since as an adult, your spine is done developing and this dysfunction has become cemented in the spine.  When left untreated, scoliosis can cause some serious lifelong problems.

Neglected cases of scoliosis can be very painful throughout the entire spine and even the buttocks.  It can lead to shooting sciatica pains as well as re-occurring injuries and loss of height.  Leaving this condition untreated long enough can interfere with your heart and lung function as well as leave the person physically disabled and possibly left with no alternative to surgery.

Treatment Studies

It is important to investigate all the information at your disposal when selecting a course of treatment for a condition like scoliosis.  The more well-known scoliosis treatments can turn out to be abrasive and even harmful.

Braces are more and more often being avoided in modern-day medicine because they limit movement in your spine causing your muscles to weaken and can even cause atrophy as well as degrative joint issues and much more.  Usually scoliosis braces cause pain, which can be an issue since children usually do not feel scoliosis pain before bracing.  Not to mention that the benefits gained through bracing go away once the brace is no longer used.

There are many studies out there that show how scoliosis surgery can be less than beneficial. Adults that do not get surgery for their scoliosis are actually found to have a better quality of life over those who do elect to get the surgery.  A report from 2007 says that there have been no studies proving any long-term benefits from scoliosis surgery.  There was a study which found that 40% of people who had scoliosis surgery were seriously handicapped within only 17 years.

There was a report compiled of post-pubescent scoliosis sufferers using Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP).  Each one of them showed vast improvement to the curvature of their spine and they each experienced a significant improvement in the pain associated with their condition.

There is also this simply amazing study including 28 adults who had some amazing results through chiropractic.  I mean, check out this table.  We are talking about treatment for only 6 months that straightened the scoliosis curve at an average of over 10 degrees- and after 1 ½ years of no treatment, that average curvature gained back less than a degree of what was corrected!

It only gets more impressive.  Those first 6 months cut the average amount of pain for these suffers more than in half- then their pain levels just kept decreasing for the next 1 ½ years of no treatment.  Their mobility function was also improved by nearly half in those first 6 months and continued to improve.  I am truly impressed with these results.

Since scoliosis is such a unique disorder, it needs to be handled in a very involved and personalized manner.  Chiropractors are not all created equally.  Make sure that when you look for a chiropractor to treat scoliosis that they have had special experience in treating the condition with positive results from their previous scoliosis patients.

The doctors at Advanced Chiropractic Associates in Knoxville, TN create a special plan specific to the individual scoliosis case, through utilizing Chiropractic BioPhysics.  In using techniques like radiological imaging to view the spine, your Advanced Chiropractic chiropractor will be able to create a unique treatment plan tailored to your, or your loved one’s, specific condition.  A chiropractor trained in CBD will be able to track the body’s response to treatment as well as the spinal development throughout adolescence.

Scoliosis

Scoliosis runs in my family, and my brother had to have rods in his back. My mom didn’t want that for me.

We have been doing treatment for several months. The treatments are very easy and non-painful.

The spine curvature has decreased!

SUCCESS!!

Scoliosis and Lower Back Pain

I have had a severe curvature of my spine all my life, and it began pinching causing pain to my right hip. I could hardly walk, sit or stand. Lower back pain had become a way of life.

Tried other care to no avail.

Since treatment I am mobile! I can sit, get up from a chair, roll over in bed and stand up straight without pain. I can walk a mile a day now!

My numbness in my legs due to neuropathy has decreased.

Less stress, less pain and at 71 feel renewed and grateful to have Dr. Parson as my doctor.
