Stretch of the Week: Sphinx

This simple yoga pose relieves back pain when done correctly and is incorporated into daily stretching routines.

Hi I'm Dr. Parson. We are here to do short segments on things to do at home. This is my lovely assistant Diana and she'll be performing them, and we'll try to get these right and give you something to do at home. So we're going to start with some stretches and strengthening as both have a little bit combined with things to do for your back. I hope you'll take these and use them consistently. So the first movement to start with is Sphinx. Its a yoga pose very simple, great for the back, and back extension.  So you're flat right here, you put your elbows right underneath your shoulders, head comes up, she reaches up, and when you squeeze the glutes push down and hold. That gives a great arch to the back, helps with back problems, and disk problems. You want to hold this for about 30 seconds. The key thing is get the head up like a turtle. So that's called Sphinx and then next we'll show you the modification of that with a little more intensity.
